Before Surgery: Understanding What Your Pet Needs

Before recommending surgery, our veterinary team will evaluate your pet and determine whether a procedure is the right course of treatment. Depending on your pet’s condition, this may include a physical examination, blood work, digital X-rays, ultrasound, or other diagnostic testing. These evaluations help us better understand what’s happening and make the safest possible plan for your pet.

We’ll discuss our findings with you, explain the recommended procedure, and answer your questions before moving forward. We want you to feel informed about your pet’s care—not left wondering what happens next.

What Types of Surgery Do We Perform?

PriorityPet provides surgical care for a variety of urgent and soft-tissue conditions. Surgery may be recommended when a pet has an injury, infection, foreign material that needs to be removed, or another condition that cannot be appropriately treated with medication or other less-invasive care.

If your pet needs a procedure that is outside our capabilities, requires specialized equipment or expertise, or would be better served by a specialty or emergency hospital, we’ll help you understand your options and guide you toward the appropriate level of care.

Pain Management & Recovery

Surgery is only one part of your pet’s care. Recovery matters, too.

After a procedure, we’ll monitor your pet and focus on keeping them comfortable as they recover from anesthesia and surgery. Before your pet goes home, we’ll provide detailed instructions for medications, activity restrictions, incision care, feeding, and other aspects of recovery as appropriate.

We’ll also explain what you should watch for at home and when you should contact us if something doesn’t seem right. Having clear instructions can make those first few days much less stressful—and help you feel confident caring for your pet at home.

Working With Your Primary Veterinarian

If your pet has an established relationship with another veterinarian, we want to be part of that care team. With your permission, we can share medical records, diagnostic results, treatment information, and surgical updates with your primary veterinarian. This helps ensure everyone involved in your pet’s care has the information they need for appropriate follow-up.

Once your pet is ready to return to their regular veterinary team, we’ll help make that transition as seamless as possible.

When a Surgical Referral Is the Best Choice

Not every surgical case is appropriate for an urgent care setting, and recommending a referral is sometimes the safest thing we can do for your pet.

Some procedures require specialized equipment, advanced surgical expertise, intensive post-operative monitoring, or overnight hospitalization. In other situations, the complexity of the case or timing may mean that another facility is better equipped to provide the level of care your pet needs.

If that happens, we’ll explain why a referral is recommended and help you understand the next steps. Our goal isn’t simply to perform a procedure, it’s to make sure your pet receives the right care, in the right setting, at the right time.
